UiT The Arctic University of Norway – new Technology Building

UiT The Arctic University of Norway is the world’s northernmost university and the largest teaching and research institution in the North Calotte region. About the project

About the project

The University of Tromsø merged with Tromsø University College in 2009, and subsequently in 2013 with the University College of Finnmark. The combined university is now known as UiT The Arctic University of Norway. After the merger with Tromsø University College, it was decided to move the college’s engineering department to the university’s campus at Breivika, with the aim of housing all the university’s science and technology departments in a single new building. This building has now been completed and accommodates teaching and research in fields such as space physics, geophysics, data analysis, sensor technology, energy and climate studies, safety technology, aviation, and marine engineering.

Outside the building, the artist duo Lutz-Rainer Müller (DE) and Stian Ådlandsvik (NO) have created an installation of 10 street lamps from all over the world. The lamps, which are all slightly different in design, come from cities that are home to the world’s largest container ports and airports, such as Tokyo, Chicago and Singapore. Each lamp is installed at an angle that is equivalent to an upright (90 degree) angle at its place of origin, and as a result all point in different directions. Each lamp is programmed to be illuminated during the hours of darkness in its city of origin, creating a 24-hour light display. Together the lamps create a poetic outdoor space that gives one a wider perspective on one’s geographical location.

Three other artists have also contributed artworks for the Technology Building. Unni Gjertsen’s Dakar–Oslo consists of a book and two iron objects. Espen Sommer Eide has created six prints and a temporary video work. Finally, the wall outside the ship’s bridge simulator hosts Big Green Wave by Andreas Siqueland. The green and blue abstract wave-forms in this work provide an all-encompassing backdrop to the theatre of waves taking place in the simulator inside.
