About the project

About the project

Two new buildings at Haukeland University Hospital will accommodate a comprehensive range of paediatric healthcare services. The first building has now been completed. The art projects installed in the building help create a caring and calm atmosphere in an environment that many people find stressful.

The British designer Miriam Sleeman and the Australian-born designer Thomas Sloan have created Colour Clouds, a digital, light-based artwork that has been installed in the entrance lobby. The “clouds” are two panels composed of prism-like shapes illuminated by LED lights. When the area is quiet, the lights pulsate slowly to display abstract colour patterns. But if someone touches one of the clouds, there is an immediate and dynamic reaction: the colours on the person’s clothes “transfer ” to the artwork and the lights pulsate with increasing speed and intensity until the person moves away.

Drawings by the Norwegian artist Anne Knutsdatter Wille have been used to create Children as heroes – heroes as children. Wille’s delicate pencil drawings have been enlarged and transferred to the glass windows at the main entrance and on walls leading to the indoor swimming pool. The drawings, which are inspired by dreams, imaginary worlds and traditional folktales, invite one to enter a playful and slightly scary world.

In Once upon a time, the Norwegian artist Ida Carolyn Helland-Hansen has created colourful patterns that also function as directional lines on the floor of the hospital’s main corridors. The lines mark routes to various rooms and departments, but also function to define the space in a way that may appeal to the young patients.

In the newly created gardens outside the wards and consultation rooms, the artist duo Mari Røysamb and Ole Rósen have created a work titled Pearls. This comprises three large “pearls” of mirror-polished stainless steel, each decorated with a different pattern. The gardens also feature a group of sculptures by Petter Hepsø. Titled Inverse XI, Inverse XII and Inverse XIII, the sculptures represent three bronze ponies of various sizes.
