About the project

About the project

At the Directorate of Norwegian Correctional Service building in Lillestrøm, Marie Buskov continues to explore a theme that is familiar in her work: the relationship between two- and three-dimensional forms. Buskov’s art project Seeing and assembling consists of five outdoor sculptures, five wall installations and a large-scale decal work on the street-facing Windows.

The building is shared by the Directorate of the Norwegian Correctional Service and the service’s college and in-service training centre. The three wings of the building surround a courtyard that is open to the street on one side. The main communal areas are on the ground floor with large windows looking onto the courtyard. Artworks in the communal areas and the courtyard thus become part of the urban environment and soften the building’s austere façades.

Buskov transforms structures and shapes taken from architectural photographs into sculptures and collages. The results can be described as spacious, rhythmic and balanced.

Her wall installations have an abstract visual language that employs architectonic forms and perspectives. Buskov has worked directly on the walls to create compositions that consist of fields of paint combined with coloured steel panels. Shapes from these compositions have been assembled into four colourful sculptures in front of the main entrance to the building, and the same style of visual expression – albeit in more subdued colours – continues in the decal work on the canteen windows. The consistent use of colour and shape throughout the interior and exterior artworks gives the building a clear visual Identity.

Marie Buskov (born 1980) studied fine art at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. The project for the Norwegian Correctional Service is her first public art commission. The University College of Southeast-Norway (USN) and the Nye Østre Church in Porsgrunn have commissioned works from her, and the City of Oslo has purchased her work.

The project is one of 11 art projects realized as part of the ninth funding round (2015-2017) of the Art Programme for Government Agencies in Leased Private Facilities and for Older Government Buildings (LES).
